This pointer is in a class by itself - it is super bright, way above what a normal pointer is, especially one that costs about 10 bucks. I have tried various pointers over the years and the usual problem is they don't work or if they do they don't put out much light or when they do, the light varies from strong to weak while still pushing the button. This pointer is strong all the time and easily projects a visible beam in any size room or auditorium, if not across the street. It comes with a cap which splits the beam into a mini starlight show, which throws multiple points on the wall. Turning the cap changes the display from a series of dots in rows to a kaleidoscope effect. I am not sure exactly what one would use this for (not in a class, boardroom or for your cat!) but it's impressive nonetheless. A few comments: 1. The pointer does not come with instructions. In lieu of these - a) insert two AAA batteries in the tube head first, b) to get the star effect, rotate the head with the button pushed, and c) to change to a straight single-dot pointer, unscrew the cap between the two smooth chrome sections below the rotating head. 2. This pointer is about twice the weight of ordinary pointers and is about an inch longer than a ballpoint pen. 3. To use the laser the button must be pushed down - there is no always-on feature, which is probably a good thing considering how much juice it likely uses to produce such a strong beam.

This is the best 9 dollars I've spent for a laser.
Well for me...I can burn stuff and I don't think mines is really a 5mwlaser.
